smartctl mistakenly reports error where none is...

Reported by: Dave Purdy Owned by: Christian Franke

Component: smartctl Version: 6.3

Description

The offending line/output is:
SMART Status command failed: scsi error medium or hardware error (serious)

I noticed this odd behavior when I upgraded from smartmontools from 5.41 to 6.4 (automatically triggered in Debian when diet-upgrading from Wheezy to Jessie).

I had several SATA drives (SSD and rotational) that I had tested when connected via SATA and they tested fine, in both 5.41 and in 6.4. When connected to a supported USB FA-GoFlex Desk device, it worked fine under 5.41. After upgrading to 6.4, I saw this erroneous output :

Again, this has been replicated w/ known good drives. Downgrading to 5.41 mitigates the error.

Below is the output you requested. ( This is with a 2-day-old WDC Red NAS 1TB drive that I just received and installed. )

Please let me know if you need more data/info.

Thank you,

Dave

Priority: majorminor

This USB bridge violates SAT standards. It actually reports an error in the sense data of the ATA PASS-THROUGH(16) SCSI command used to issue SMART RETURN STATUS ATA command:

  >>> Sense buffer, len=22:
 00     72 04!00 00 00 00 00 0e  09 0c 00 00 00 00 00 00
 10     00 4f 00 c2 00 50
  status=2: [desc] sense_key=4! asc=0 ascq=0

Sense key 4 means HARDWARE ERROR. SAT standards require sense key 1 (RECOVERED ERROR) for ATA PASS-THROUGH sense data returning ATA output registers (SMART RETURN STATUS result).

Therefore it is IMO correct that smartctl assumes that this SCSI command failed, prints a related error message, ignores the returned status info and does an attribute check instead (see Warning:...).

Understood, as developers, you all made it clear that USB support could have some bumps, due to the "rich variety" of bridge devices.

Questions:
? Since smartmontools did function correctly with this USB bridge in version 5.4x (both not flagging "non-errors", and correctly detecting "bad or worrisome attributes"), do you think it is likely that you'll fix or revert whatever change took place between 5.4x and 6.3 ?

? Is there a flag that I could be utilizing to skip a certain SAT command (the one that triggers the error message? I still want to check the attributes, and would love to stick with the functionality that is there in the 5.4x versions. I've read the docs, searched here and there, but haven't seen any way to do that.

smartmontools now functions correctly because it both prints the error reported by the USB bridge firmware, and still checks the attributes for failures. :-)

Older versions ignored the SCSI error which resulted in bogus output with other devices. Therefore this fix will not be reverted.

There is no extra flag to skip this SAT command because this specific command is the only one requested if -H option is set.

Note that the only visible difference between old and new versions is that now these two additional lines are printed:

SMART Status command failed: scsi error medium or hardware error (serious)
...
Warning: This result is based on an Attribute check.

To better support such USB bridges with broken SAT layer, it possibly makes sense to heuristically ignore the sense key if a correct SAT ATA RETURN DESCRIPTOR is provided. This requires further investigation, therefore I leave this ticket open as 'undecided' for now.

@ Chris : Thanks for clarifying that, I understand what you are saying. I'll set my server to hold my version/package at Debian's 5.41/r3365 for now.

A similar problem was reported for an USB device (0x0d49:0x7310) behind Linux Kernel 2.6.32-573.1.1.el6 from CentOS 6.7, see smartmontools-support mailing list.
