    3535 * Thanks to contributor Jordan Hargrave, smartmontools now have support for MegaRAID controllers. Get ''current version'' from [http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/download.html#SVNInstall SVN] and use {{{-d megaraid,N}}} to inspect disk N behind the controller.

     37== About Smartmontools ==
     38The smartmontools package contains two utility programs ({{{smartctl}}} and {{{smartd}}})
     39to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and
     40Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA and SCSI harddisks.
     41In many cases, these utilities will provide advanced warning of disk degradation and failure.
     42
     43Smartmontools was originally derived from the Linux [http://sourceforge.net/projects/smartsuite/ smartsuite package]
     44and actually supports ATA/ATAPI/SATA-3 to -8 disks and [http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/smartmontools_scsi.html SCSI]
     45disks and tape devices. It should run on any modern Darwin (Mac OS X), Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD,
     46Solaris, OS/2, Cygwin, QNX, eComStation or [http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/faq.html#windows Windows] system.
     47Smartmontools can also be run from one of many different
     48[http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/faq.html#bootable bootable CDs or floppies].
     49
     50Due to OS-specific issues and also depending on the different state of smartmontools
     51development on the platforms, device support ist not the same for all OS platforms. We provide info
     52about [wiki:Supported_RAID-Controllers RAID-controller support] here on the homepage
     53and of course in the [wiki:TocDoc#Manpages manpages].
     54
     55Thanks to Alexander Shaduri, there is also a graphical user interface for {{{smartctl}}}
     56available. Go to the Homepage of [http://gsmartcontrol.berlios.de/ GSmartControl]
     57to get all info and the software itself. Have a look at the
     58[http://gsmartcontrol.berlios.de/home/index.php/en/Screenshots screenshots]
     59and the [http://gsmartcontrol.berlios.de/home/index.php/en/About feature list]
     60to get an impression of this nice tool.
