Is this a drive from a WD My Book USB drive or similar ?

Please try:

# smartctl --identify=wb /dev/sdX | grep -i trim
  69     14          ?   Deterministic data after trim supported
  69      5          ?   Trimmed LBA range(s) returning zeroed data supported
 169      0          ?   Trim bit in DATA SET MANAGEMENT command supported

No TRIM support, so possibly CMR.
