Description (last modified by )
hi team,
when you run the smartctl 7.1 on following HDD it fails to read smart selective self test log.
Model Family: Dell Certified Intel S4x00/D3-S4x10 Series SSDs
Device Model: SSDSC2KB038T8R
Serial Number: PHYF026301MX3P8EGN
i understand that this drive does not support selective self logging. Why the output is "csi error unsupported field in scsi command" instead of not supported?
see the text below to understand.

Please also provide the smartctl command line is used to produce the output above.
The Selective Self-test support information returned by this drive is inconsistent:
The SMART DATA block indicates Selective Self-test support in bit 6 (0x40) of Offline data collection capabilities:
Offline data collection capabilities: (0x79) SMART execute Offline immediate. ... Selective Self-test supported.
The SMART Log Directory does NOT indicate Selective Self-test log support:
General Purpose Log Directory Version 1 SMART Log Directory Version 1 [multi-sector log support] Address Access R/W Size Description ... 0x08 GPL R/O 2 Power Conditions log 0x09 SL R/W 1 Selective self-test log <=== MISSING 0x10 GPL R/O 1 NCQ Command Error log
Smartctl assumes Selective Self-test log support if bit 6 of Offline data collection capabilities is set. It does not check for log address 0x09 in the SMART Log Directory because it is a common firmware bug that that this log is not included.
If selective self-tests are not supported, the ATA command SMART READ LOG 0x09 typically fails. The Linux SAT (SCSI/ATA Translation) layer may translate this to SCSI sense codes for unsupported field in scsi command

Hey Christian,
Thanks for your quick response and I am sorry to be a pain and pushing for this.
The command used to check this
root@host:/home/ubuntu# smartctl -a /dev/sdk
smartctl 7.1 2019-12-30 r5022 [x86_64-linux-5.8.0-43-generic] (local build)

so one quick question.. i have another Hynix sata SSD where the bit 6 of the Offline data collection capabilities is set to 0 (which means not supported) but the SMART Log Directory does indicate Selective Self-test log support as it has that 0x09 entry in the table ( which is missing in Intel SSD).
So am a bit confused? how does it works? should it meet both conditions?
1- bit 6 set to 1 for offline data collection capabilities.
2- the entry 0x09 should be present in Smart log directoty table.

sudo -n smartctl --xall /dev/sdj
OK, so no controller specific code is involved.
If possible, please report the problem to the vendor of the drive. It should either not report Selective Self-test capability or provide access to Selective Self-test log via SMART READ/WRITE LOG commands.
... should it meet both conditions?
Yes. The Selective Self-test log is mandatory to start Selective Self-tests because it is used to pass the selected LBA ranges to the disk.
This log could be read separately with smartctl -l smartlog,0x09 ...

thanks for your continuous support. i really appreciate it. see the output from Hynix SSD- this HDDs does not support selective self logging. so again , does this needs to be addressed by vendor? if yes, what changes are expected from them, if you could let me know. this has been taken using the same command- smartctl --xall /dev/sdj

No, this is only a smartctl --all
output which does not contain the Log Directory and newer logs.
TODOs for firmware authors:
SSDSC2KB038T8R
:
- If Selective self-tests should be supported: Fix SMART READ (and possibly WRITE) LOG access to log 0x09 and add this log to Log Directory.
- Otherwise: Clear bit 6 of Offline data collection capabilities byte.
HFS3T8G32FEH-7410A
:
- If Selective self-tests are supported: Set bit 6 of Offline data collection capabilities.
- Otherwise: Remove log 0x09 from Log Directory.
Both are minor issues. Selective Self-test are rarely used on SSDs and not supported by most tools.
