The lack of a real Product name suggests that there is some emulation layer between disk and smartctl. RAID-controller ?

No hardware RAID controller, we RAID software LVM is used

Access to drives behind HP Controllers may work with -d cciss,N option, see man page.

The -a report only contains legacy ATA SMART information. It does not include the newer ATA SMART Extended Comprehensive Error Log. Try -x instead.

Please test smartctl -d cciss,0 -t short /dev/sdb. If it works as expected, close this ticket with resolution invalid.

According to log message works as expected.

P.S. if your intention is to check disk surface - short test is not the best idea, it usually just do basic controller checks and disk service area. Use long test instead. Also you can do similar thing with raid patrol read feature.

comment:10 by Alex Samorukov, 4 years ago

p.s. disk itself seems to be an intel s4600 ssd, but with modified firmware, so attributes do no match to intel spec. I was not able to find any it pdf.
