I'm also having issues with this chip. In my case, it's a USB to M.2 SATA (and NOT NVMe) bridge.
In my case, the smartctl
command hangs forever with the wrongly identified -d sntjmicron
option. As a consequence, a defunct process is left around until the system is rebooted.
With -d sat
(or using a local drive DB) works OK.

As aforementioned, -d sntjmicron
only prints the copyright notice, hangs, and a defunct process that cannot be killed by any means remains forever:
